Anisotropic Tomography Around La Reunion Island From Rayleigh Waves ArchiMer
Mazzullo, Alessandro; Stutzmann, Eleonore; Montagner, Jean-paul; Kiselev, Sergey; Maurya, Satish; Barruol, Guilhem; Sigloch, Karin.
In the western Indian Ocean, the Reunion hot spot is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. Temporal interactions between ridges and plumes have shaped the structure of the zone. This study investigates the mantle structure using data from the Reunion Hotspot and Upper Mantle-Reunions Unterer Mantel (RHUM-RUM) project, which significantly increased the seismic coverage of the western part of the Indian Ocean. For more than 1year, 57 ocean bottom seismometer stations and 23 temporary land stations were deployed over this area. For each earthquake station path, the Rayleigh wave fundamental mode phase velocities were measured for the periods from 30s to 300s and group velocities for the period from 16s to 250s. A three-dimensional model of the shear...

Brain neuroimaging of domestic cats: correlation between computed tomography and cross- sectional anatomy Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Nepomuceno,A.C.; Zanatta,R.; Chung,D.G.; Costa,P.F.; Feliciano,M.A.R.; Avante,M.L.; Lopes,L.S.; Canola,J.C..
ABSTRACT Computed tomography of the brain is necessary as part of the diagnosis of lesions of the central nervous system. In this study we used six domestic cats, male or female, aged between one and five years, evaluated by Computed Tomography (CT) examination without clinical signs of central nervous system disorders. Two euthanized animals stating a condition unrelated to the nervous system were incorporated into this study. The proposal consisted in establishing detailed anatomical description of tomographic images of normal brain of cats, using as reference anatomical images of cross sections of the stained brain and cranial part, with thicknesses similar to the planes of the CT images. CT examinations were performed with and without intravenous...

Cervical vertebral osteomyelitis secondary to Streptococcus equi infection in an adult horse - case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Alonso,J.M.; Ávila,A.R.; Bueno,L.M.C.; Hataka,A.; Machado,V.M.V.; Alves,A.L.G.; Watanabe,M.J.; Rodrigues,C.A.; Barbosa,R.M.; Hussni,C.A..
ABSTRACT A 15-year-old, mixed breed, male horse was attended with a history of multiple abscesses in the cervical region with a three-year evolution. Upon admission, three fistulous tracts with drainage of purulent secretions in the cervical region, low body score, restriction of cervical movements, and painful sensitivity to palpation were observed. The horse was diagnosed with osteomyelitis secondary to Streptococcus equi infection. The initial treatment was antibiotic therapy and local curative. Owing to the lack of response, surgical debridement was performed. An initial favorable response was observed; however, after 4 months, drainage recurred, and the animal was euthanized. A post-mortem computed tomography scan was performed to obtain details of...

Constraints on the shallow velocity structure of the Lucky Strike Volcano, Mid-Atlantic Ridge, from downward continued multichannel streamer data ArchiMer
Arnulf, A. F.; Harding, A. J.; Kent, G. M.; Singh, Shubpreet; Crawford, W. C..
The shallow velocity structure of the Lucky Strike segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is investigated using seismic refraction and reflection techniques applied to downward continued multichannel streamer data. We present a three-dimensional velocity model beneath the Lucky Strike Volcano with unprecedented spatial resolutions of a few hundred meters. These new constraints reveal large lateral variations in P wave velocity structure beneath this feature. Throughout the study area, uppermost crustal velocities are significantly lower than those inferred from lower resolution ocean bottom seismometer studies, with the lowest values (1.8–2.2 km/s) found beneath the three central volcanic cones. Within the central volcano, distinct shallow units are mapped that...

Correlations between forced oscillation technique parameters and pulmonary densitovolumetry values in patients with acromegaly BJMBR
Camilo,G.B.; Carvalho,A.R.S.; Machado,D.C.; Mogami,R.; Kasuki,L.; Gadelha,M.R.; Melo,P.L.; Lopes,A.J..
The aims of this study were to evaluate the forced oscillation technique (FOT) and pulmonary densitovolumetry in acromegalic patients and to examine the correlations between these findings. In this cross-sectional study, 29 non-smoking acromegalic patients and 17 paired controls were subjected to the FOT and quantification of lung volume using multidetector computed tomography (Q-MDCT). Compared with the controls, the acromegalic patients had a higher value for resonance frequency [15.3 (10.9-19.7) vs 11.4 (9.05-17.6) Hz, P=0.023] and a lower value for mean reactance [0.32 (0.21-0.64) vs 0.49 (0.34-0.96) cm H2O/L/s2, P=0.005]. In inspiratory Q-MDCT, the acromegalic patients had higher percentages of total lung volume (TLV) for nonaerated and poorly aerated...

Crustal structure of the eastern Algerian continental margin and adjacent deep basin: implications for late Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the western Mediterranean ArchiMer
Bouyahiaoui, B.; Sage, F.; Abtout, A.; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Yelles-chaouche, K.; Schnuerle, P.; Marok, A.; Deverchere, Jacques; Arab, M.; Galve, A.; Collot, J.y..
We determine the deep structure of the eastern Algerian basin and its southern margin in the Annaba region (easternmost Algeria), to better constrain the plate kinematic reconstruction in this region. This study is based on new geophysical data collected during the SPIRAL cruise in 2009, which included a wide-angle, 240-km-long, onshore–offshore seismic profile, multichannel seismic reflection lines and gravity and magnetic data, complemented by the available geophysical data for the study area. The analysis and modelling of the wide-angle seismic data including refracted and reflected arrival travel times, and integrated with the multichannel seismic reflection lines, reveal the detailed structure of an ocean-to-continent transition. In the deep basin,...

Evaluation of ovarian structures using computerized microtomography Anais da ABC (AABC)
PAULINI,FERNANDA; CHAVES,SACHA B.; RÔLO,JOSÉ LUIZ J.P.; AZEVEDO,RICARDO B. DE; LUCCI,CAROLINA M..
ABSTRACT Visualization and clear understanding of the ovarian structures are important in determining the stage of oestrus, helping to diagnose several pathologies and supporting advances in reproductive technologies. In this research, computerized microtomography (microCT) was used to explore and characterize the ovarian structure of seven mammalian species. Ovaries of rats, female dog, queens, cows, mares, sows and a female donkey were used. After microCT scanning, the same samples were prepared for histologic evaluation, used here as a validation criterion. It was possible to distinguish regions of the cortex and medulla, visualize the morphology and distribution of blood vessels, clearly observe corpus luteum and antral follicles, and visualize oocytes...

Galactomannan use in clinical practice: providing free testing is not the full answer BJID
dos Santos,Jeniffer S.; Hermes,Djuli M.; Pasqualotto,Alessandro C..
ABSTRACT Introduction: Invasive aspergillosis is a condition associated with a high mortality rate mostly due to difficulties in performing an early diagnosis. In recent years, galactomannan detection has markedly improved the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis, but very little is known on how physicians deal with this test in clinical practice. Methods: This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the indications for the use of serum galactomannan in a large Brazilian hospital, between 2015 and 2016. No specific protocol was in place for GM request. We reviewed the medical records of adult (>18 years-old) patients who were tested for galactomannan due to one the following indications: screening, diagnosis, or treatment follow-up. Additional variables...

The Calabrian subduction zone is one of the narrowest arcs on Earth and a key area to understand the geodynamic evolution of the Mediterranean and other marginal seas. Here in the Ionian Sea, the African plate subducts beneath Eurasia. Imaging the boundary between the downgoing slab and the upper plate along the Calabrian subduction zone is important for assessing the potential of the subduction zone to generate mega‐thrust earthquakes and was the main objective of this study. Here we present and analyze the results from a 380 km long, wide‐angle seismic profile spanning the complete subduction zone, from the deep Ionian Basin and the accretionary wedge to NE Sicily, with additional constraints offered by 3‐D Gravity modeling and the analysis of earthquake...

Performance assessment of the single photon emission microscope: high spatial resolution SPECT imaging of small animal organs BJMBR
Mejia,J.; Reis,M.A.; Miranda,A.C.C.; Batista,I.R.; Barboza,M.R.F.; Shih,M.C.; Fu,G.; Chen,C.T.; Meng,L.J.; Bressan,R.A.; Amaro Jr,E..
The single photon emission microscope (SPEM) is an instrument developed to obtain high spatial resolution single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images of small structures inside the mouse brain. SPEM consists of two independent imaging devices, which combine a multipinhole collimator, a high-resolution, thallium-doped cesium iodide [CsI(Tl)] columnar scintillator, a demagnifying/intensifier tube, and an electron-multiplying charge-coupling device (CCD). Collimators have 300- and 450-µm diameter pinholes on tungsten slabs, in hexagonal arrays of 19 and 7 holes. Projection data are acquired in a photon-counting strategy, where CCD frames are stored at 50 frames per second, with a radius of rotation of 35 mm and magnification factor of one. The...

Pyrenean orogeny and plate kinematics - art. no. B08104 ArchiMer
Sibuet, Jean-claude; Srivastava, Sp; Spakman, W.
The evolution of the Pyrenees, a mountain range between Iberia and Eurasia, has remained the subject of many debates between geologists and geophysicists for a long time. By combining the identification of seafloor spreading anomalies A33o to M0 in the Bay of Biscay with those in the North Atlantic, we have derived a position of a mean pole of rotation for the entire opening of the Bay of Biscay. Four hundred kilometers of shortening took place between the Iberian and Eurasian plates in the Pyrenean domain during the opening of the Bay of Biscay, from chrons M0 to A33o time (118 to 80 Ma). The deep seismic Etude Continentale et Oceanique par Reflexion et refraction Sismique (ECORS) profile shot across the Pyrenees and teleseismic data show the presence of...

Quasi-3D seismic reflection imaging, and wide-angle velocity structure of nearly amagmatic oceanic lithosphere at the ultra-slow spreading Southwest Indian Ridge ArchiMer
Momoh, Ekeabino; Cannat, Mathilde; Watremez, Louise; Leroy, Sylvie; Singh, Satish C..
We present results from 3D processing of 2D seismic data shot along 100 m-spaced profiles in a 1.8 km wide by 24 km long box during the SISMOSMOOTH 2014 cruise. The study is aimed at understanding the oceanic crust formed at an end-member mid-ocean ridge environment of nearly zero melt supply. Three distinct packages of reflectors are imaged: (1) south-facing reflectors which we propose correspond to the damage zone induced by the active axial detachment fault. Reflectors in the damage zone have dips up to 60° and are visible down to 5 km below the seafloor; (2) series of north-dipping reflectors in the hanging wall of the detachment fault. These reflectors may correspond to damage zone inherited from a previous, north-dipping detachment fault, or small...

Seismic imaging of the eastern Algerian margin off Jijel: integrating wide-angle seismic modelling and multichannel seismic pre-stack depth migration ArchiMer
Mihoubi, A.; Schnurle, Philippe; Benaissa, Z.; Badsi, M.; Bracene, R.; Djelit, H.; Geli, Louis; Sage, F.; Agoudjil, A.; Klingelhoefer, Frauke.
This study presents the results of a deep seismic survey across the north Algerian margin, based on the combination of 2-D multichannel and wide-angle seismic data simultaneously recorded by 41 ocean bottom seismometers deployed along a north-south line extending 180 km off Jijel into the Algerian offshore basin, and 25 land stations deployed along a 100-km-long line, cutting through the Lesser Kabylia and the Tellian thrust-belt. The final model obtained using forward modelling of the wide-angle data and pre-stack depth migration of the seismic reflection data provides an unprecedented view of the sedimentary and crustal structure of the margin. The sedimentary layers in the Algerian basin are 3.75 km thick to the north and up to 4.5-5 km thick at the...

Shear velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle of Madagascar derived from surface wave tomography ArchiMer
Pratt, Martin J.; Wysession, Michael E.; Aleqabi, Ghassan; Wiens, Douglas A.; Nyblade, Andrew A.; Shore, Patrick; Rambolamanana, Gerard; Andriampenomanana, Fenitra; Rakotondraibe, Tsiriandrimanana; Tucker, Robert D.; Barruol, Guilhem; Rindraharisaona, Elisa.
The crust and upper mantle of the Madagascar continental fragment remained largely unexplored until a series of recent broadband seismic experiments. An island-wide deployment of broadband seismic instruments has allowed the first study of phase velocity variations, derived from surface waves, across the entire island. Late Cenozoic alkaline intraplate volcanism has occurred in three separate regions of Madagascar (north, central and southwest), with the north and central volcanism active until <1 Ma, but the sources of which remains uncertain. Combined analysis of three complementary surface wave methods (ambient noise, Rayleigh wave cross-correlations, and two-plane-wave) illuminate the upper mantle down to depths of 150 km. The phase-velocity...

Study of the Internal Morphology of the Mesiobuccal Root of Upper First Permanent Molar Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography International Journal of Morphology
Campos Netto,Petronio de Albuquerque; Lins,Carla Cabral dos Santos Accioly; Lins,Carol Vasconcelos; Lima,Georgina Agnelo; Gomes Frazão,Marco Antônio.
The aim of this study was to investigate and classify the internal morphology of the mesiobuccal root of upper first permanent molar, using the cone beam computed tomography. A total of 60 first permanent molars, not healthy and with intact pulp cavity, belonging to the Postgraduate dentistry bank, underwent the computed tomography. Axial images of each tooth were analyzed, and results showed that according to the number of conduits, 21 specimens (35%) had single conduit and 39 exhibited two conduits (65%). In reference to the types of internal configuration most commonly found according to Vertucci classification; type I (single channel that extends from the pulp chamber to the apex) was the most frequent (35%), followed by type II (two separate canals...

Three-dimensional tomographic inversion of combined reflection and refraction seismic traveltime data ArchiMer
Hobro, Jwd; Singh, Sc; Minshull, Ta.
A tomographic inversion method is presented for the determination of 3-D velocity and interface structure from a wide range of body-wave seismic traveltime data types. It is applicable to refraction, wide-angle reflection, normal-incidence and multichannel seismic data, and is best suited to a combination of these that provides good independent constraints on seismic velocities and interface depths. The inversion process seeks a layer-interface minimum-structure model that is able to explain the given data satisfactorily by inverting to minimize data misfit and model roughness norms simultaneously. This regularized inversion, and the use of smooth functions to describe velocities and depths, allows the highly non-linear tomographic problem to be...
